Basic Information About the Infinity-At-Home Network Service
F.A.Q.

Earth icon Most home computers purchased within the past 3-4 years should be capable of supporting the network hardware and software to connect to the network. The following links will help you determine what you need and whether or not your system is compatible.

About the network services and physical connections.

Infinity-At-Home uses state of the art technology to provide broadband network connections throughout the building. Depending on existing wiring in the building your computer connects using either a dedicated data network connection, or shares the phone wire with your telephone. In either case you can be using the network and your phone at the same time. Your computer communicates to the Internet using a network protocol called TCP/IP. Think of this as the language computers use to talk so they can understand the messages and information that is transmitted between them. Computers all over the world send and receive information on the Internet using TCP/IP. Most major computers support TCP/IP.

Will my computer work with this service?

Most computers that support Microsoft Windows and Macintosh operating systems will work on the network. The primary requirement is that your system supports the TCP/IP protocol. There are other factors, such as memory, graphics processing capabilities, processor speed and the ability to support either an ETHERNET connection that are important to overall capabilities and system performance.

Recommended Minimum Computer Requirements

  • Processor speed of 400 Mhz or more
  • Memory of 128 Mbytes or more
  • Hard Disk of 4 GBytes or more
  • Microsoft Operating Systems of Windows 2000 or later
  • Macintosh Operating Systems of MAC OS X or later
  • Ethernet Connection

If you don't have an Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) in your computer, you can purchase one and install it, or have your local computer store install it for you. Installation and configuration of your computer is the responsibility of the tenant. See Configurations Guides for network configuration assistance.

How do I configure my computer networking options?

The basic connection and configuration steps for you to set up your computer and start using the Internet is as follows:

  1. Connect your computer to the network with a connecting cable from your Ethernet port.
  2. Verify that your computer has your network card or installed with a proper device driver.
  3. Verify that your network settings have TCP/IP enabled and available.
  4. Set your LAN/Network configuration to use DHCP addressing, or select GET IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY.
  5. Set DNS settings should be DISABLED or use GET DNS FROM NETWORK.
  6. Do not specify any static DNS servers.
  7. Do not use any static IP addresses.
  8. After configuring your computer you may have to restart it.
  9. Set your browser (MS Explorer or Netscape.) to use a LAN connection as the preferred connection method.

Are there any limitations to what I can do on the network?

Infinity-At-Home broadband service is designed for you to access information and communication with others using the global Internet. Our design criteria have taken the following items into consideration and should help you understand limitations.

You should be able to:

  • Browse the Internet.
  • Use popular email systems.
  • Use chat/instant messaging programs.
  • Download simple utilities like Acrobat Reader, Windows Media Player, etc.
  • Send email with attachments (some email providers have limits as to the size of attachment you can send).
  • Play popular games on the internet.
  • Perform normal internet activities as long as they do not violate any local, state, federal or international laws.

Things this service is NOT designed for:

  • Web site hosting from your point of access.
  • File serving (or P2P file server) for other users.
  • Running a business class network activity from your home.

The performance and response time you experience will be influenced by other networks and servers your data transfers to/from. This service is designed to support aggregate traffic rates up to 20 times faster than dial up. There are, however, no service level guarantees associated with this service, as networks and systems beyond your property impact your performance.

Is my connection secure?

The design of this network is such that some level of security exists to prevent normal Internet users from specifically seeing and connecting to your computer. However, you should not consider the network secure and take necessary steps to backup and protect your data. Infinity AccessNET makes no warrants nor will it be held responsibility for the security and protection of your computer or data. See the Service Agreement for details.
